Napowrimo prompts for National Poetry Writing Month! 30 poems in 30 days! Are You Up for the Challenge?
April is National Poetry Writing Month. To celebrate, poets come together and join a writing challenge to write a poem every day throughout April. That makes for 30 poems in 30 days!
It does not matter if you are a beginner, an experienced poet, or want to enjoy the art of creative expression. NaPoWriMo is for everyone who finds joy in writing poetry. There are no rules or poetry forms you have to follow during this challenge. Be it free verse, an acrostic, or a haiku, NaPoWriMo is all about where the creative process takes you and helps you build a consistent writing habit.
It might seem daunting to find inspiration every day for 30 days, but that is where the poetry communities come in and offer you some inspiration. All across social media platforms, writing blogs, and online communities, you can find poets offering writing prompts to inspire you! Including me!
I have 30 poetry prompts for you to use as a spark of creativity for your writing challenge this April! I am joining you in writing with these prompts for the entire month. Challenging myself to write and post a poem for 30 days long on my socials. So, I hope to see you there and read your takes on these prompts!
Tips for NaPoWriMo
1. Build a writing habit
Try setting aside an hour or two to focus on your writing. Find a space that feels comfortable and inspiring to practice your writing in. If you can, try writing around the same time of day. When you start to establish a consistent writing habit, your mind will start to associate that time and location with your daily writing practice. And just like any habit, the more you write consistently, the more natural the creative process will become.
2. Experiment
Poetry is all about experimentation with words, rhyming schemes, line breaks, and metaphors. The possibilities go on and on. NaPoWriMo invites us to explore, experiment, and play around with the creative process of writing a poem. Maybe try out a new poetry form you have not tried before. Who knows you might discover a new favorite writing form.

3. Just write
It does not matter if one day you are just not finding the right words or doubting what you wrote is good enough. The creative process is all about experimentation, making mistakes, embracing our self-doubt, and creating something beautiful anyway! We learn as we go and it might not always feel perfect but creativity is not about perfection, it is about the freedom of expression. So, don’t limit yourself by being too harsh on yourself, and instead, embrace every poem as a learning experience!
4. Remember your why
Write down your reason for starting this challenge. This can be on a sticky note that you keep in your writing space, on a notes app, or maybe at the beginning of a new notebook you bought just for this challenge. You might be joining the challenge to build a writing habit, broaden your writing skills, deepen your creativity, or even write a poetry collection through the entire challenge. Whatever your reason might be, keep it close to your heart and somewhere you can easily return to when you start losing your motivation.
It is also important to have fun during this challenge and not be too focused on the outcome. Every poem you write is a learning experience that only makes you grow as a poet.
5. Community and writing prompts
Joining a writing community can make the creative process of writing much more enjoyable and easy. It will make you stay accountable for your daily writing habits. It offers positive feedback from other poets, and you will find writing inspiration in abundance while using writing prompts. You can find poetry communities online and across all social media platforms. Mine included! So, come join me on my Instagram or Substack where I will be posting a poem daily, written for my prompts!
