Musings for May. A month blooming with growth, possibilities, and reflection.

Where April called for us to awaken from our winter slumber, May gently invites us to bloom. Spring no longer feels like a silent promise but has fully unfolded around us. The earth is stretching towards the sun again after times of harsh cold and torrents of rain, and we too are beginning to feel this gentle pull of aliveness. The world feels opener, less guarded, and quietly invites us to follow its lead. For us poets and creatives, May invites us to gather, notice, feel, and be inspired.

This is a month for quiet joys, small moments of wonder, and observing the beauty that surrounds us and the beauty we hold within. A gentle month where we take the time to reflect and reconnect with the tender earth and ourselves.

I hope you will let the month of May be gentle. Let it lean soft against your heart and dare to invite it in. Take this time to allow yourself to sink into stillness and let your writing become your way of listening to the soothing sounds of spring and the soft melodies of your own heart.

Mood of May

Each month has its own unique mood. Where March and April were still messy with transformation, May feels more tender, open, and confident in its unfolding. May feels like the promise of spring is finally kept. Trees are dressed in all shades of green, petals bravely bloom wide-open, and everything feels alive and bursting with growth.

May returns those bold, rebellious colors after months of gray. Painting the world once more to its intended palette of aliveness. With quiet confidence, nature has unfolded into its authentic self again. As writers, we are now called upon to embody that same confidence. Let it remind you that your words are ready to be heard.

Gathering inspiration

Consider starting a notebook dedicated to this month, like a secret archive of fragments gathered throughout this inspiring month.Let it be a messy collection of overheard phrases, sudden thoughts, nature sketches, and questions still needing an answer. You might not know what these seeds will become, and that is okay. Trust that even the unseen work nourishes what will eventually grow towards the surface.

Notice the changes

May invites us to notice the changes in nature and the subtle shifts in ourselves as spring unfolds. There might even be some small changes in your writing during this season. Because when the outer world changes its rhythm, the inner one often follows.

Have you noticed these small shifts in your writing? How did you notice them? Perhaps this is the perfect time to revisit those old poems with this fresh insight into your seasonal shifts.

May is an ideal time to consider your own seasonal cycles as a writer.

Creativity, like a garden, thrives when tended with curiosity and patience.

Here are some reflective questions for you to explore:

  • What creative seeds have I planted this year? Which ones do I still need to sow?

  • What has already quietly taken root in my work or creative process?

  • What parts of my writing still need nurturing?

Feel

Take this time to journal outside and embrace this stillness of aliveness surrounding you. Close your eyes and listen to the soft humming of nature around you. Listen for the whispers and reflect on how this makes you feel. Reflect on the place you are currently sitting in and how much it has changed in only four months. How are you feeling now in the center of spring? Allow yourself to follow in the soft footsteps of spring and dare to sit with your vulnerable self in this gentle embrace of nature.
