25 creative poetry prompts to inspire you to write a poem in November

November arrives in the midst of change. We see the leaves turning, the trees leafing, and the air thickens with mist and mourning.

Its first day is one where we remember those who have slipped through the veil of life and death and call out their names. We remember, we remember, we remember who you are, and you still exist here in this life, in this world, in this heart. I remember you, my grandfathers, grandmother, mother, aunt, friend. All your names are sewn into the pockets of my heart like a patchwork quilt from the ones who have shaped and loved me before.

November is a month of radical change, and I am ready to embrace what comes my way instead of fearing it. I have clung too tightly to the branches that kept me from falling; I never noticed how threadbare those branches had become. I know one day they will snap, and I’ll have no other option but to fall and feel like a failure again.

Autumn is asking me to let go, and maybe it is time I answer that calling. Even if the path seems scattered with leaves, the roads remain open, and we get to decide our direction in any season of our life. And this will be something I will take with me into November. The road and direction do not have to be clear for us to keep walking forward.

This month I am joining Novel November and challenging myself to write a rough draft of 50,000 words in 30 days for a novel idea that’s been itching in my mind for years. Now, I am finally sitting down and focusing on writing this story.

I feel excited because besides writing poetry, I have always loved storytelling. It will be a wonderful learning experience, and I will regularly update my progress on this challenge through my notes on Substack.

There is an abundance of inspiration to be found in this radical change happening around us. But I have gathered 25 creative poetry prompts this November for whoever is looking for that little spark of inspiration. I invite you to twist, play, and be creative as you weave these prompts into your poetry.

Poetry Prompts

  • Broad strokes of darkness

  • Mad about the poet

  • Keep a jar of hope

  • Cornucopia of grief

  • Wounded words

  • A house in hibernation

  • In the mourning light

  • Solidified sorrow

  • Strength in our roots

  • I hope this poem finds you.

  • I remember you

  • Relish in my undoing

  • The way the earth feels

  • A faceless beast

  • Static stars

  • Wings of fire

  • Woven into you

  • Mourning moon

  • Thief of joy

  • Autumnal tapestry

  • My soul grows wild

  • Tales of November

  • Falling on a forest floor

  • Leafless lament

  • A fistful of light

November reminds us that change is only a recalibration of our direction. We still get to choose how we move forward, even if the road ahead remains unclear. So let your writing explore what it feels like to navigate the thick mists of November. Unknown to the path before us and unseen from the path behind us.
